How can psychotherapy help me?

The goals of psychotherapy are to help the person:

  • understand why and how certain habits, symptoms, experiences and/or relationships have negative consequences on their life;

  • find solutions to, or develop skills to help them cope with their problem(s);

  • ease unpleasant emotions such as anxiety, depression, anger, sadness, etc.;

  • lead a more engaged and satisfying life on a personal, social and professional level.

When should I consider consulting a psychologist?

Psychotherapy is recommended when a person experiences a problem that hinders their personal or professional functioning, or when this problem is an obstacle to their well-being or quality of life.

What can I expect at my first session with a psychologist at the Shediac Psychological Services?

The first session will begin with the review of the consent form. Thereafter, a clinical interview (i.e. questions/discussion) will be completed to help your psychologist:

  • get to know you (i.e. What is your relationship status? Where do you work?, etc.);

  • understand your motivations for consulting (What brings you here today? Have you ever consulted a psychologist before? What you have tried thus far?, etc.);

  • understand the problematic issue(s) and how it is affecting you (How long have you been feeling this way? How are you sleeping?, etc.)

The initial assessment is typically completed with a clinical interview. Questionnaires or tests may be used to clarify the problem or the diagnosis. Following the initial assessment, a treatment plan may be presented if it is deemed appropriate.

Because choosing to begin psychotherapy is such an important and personal decision, the first session(s) will also allow the person who is consulting to ask questions and establish if they are comfortable with the psychologist, her approach as well as the proposed treatment plan.

Are sessions confidential?

Psychotherapy sessions are confidential which means your psychologist will not share any information (including the fact that you have consulted her) with anyone without your permission. However, limits to confidentiality are imposed to psychologists working in NB. These limits will be reviewed with you during the first session and can be found in our consent form.
